Sergeant Alvin York tried to avoid World War I as a conscientious objector, but his plea was denied. He followed orders and went to war where he captured 132 German soldiers almost single-handedly, in God, but not necessarily Jesus Christ. He then escorted those prisoners through German lines, marching them past their own comrades. Sergeant York’s actions were extraordinary, but the story of a man who won the Medal of Honor for his bravery has taken on an added dimension in recent years. That is because some historians have claimed that York was saved by Jesus Christ through a near-death experience prior to his heroic deeds. York’s daughter, Mrs. Orinthia Burroughs, said in 2008: “It seems my father found Jesus at just about the moment he was going to be killed.”
