Thomas Custer was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who received two Medals of Honor for his bravery and heroic actions during battle. Custer’s two Medals of Honor were awarded for his gallantry in the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Five Forks. He was one of only 19 soldiers to receive two Medals of Honor in American history, and the only one to receive them both during the Civil War. His courageous actions on the battlefield earned him great respect from his fellow soldiers and officers, as well as admiration from President Abraham Lincoln himself.
The Battle of Little Bighorn, popularly known as Custer’s Last Stand, is one of the most iconic battles in American history. It was fought between the U.S. Army led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and a coalition of Native American tribes on June 25th, 1876. While the exact cause of the battle is still debated today, many believe that Thomas Custer was to blame for the disastrous outcome. Thomas Custer was George Armstrong’s younger brother who had a reputation for recklessness and arrogance which ultimately led to his death in the battle along with his brother and their troops. His actions were seen as an affront to the Native Americans who eventually retaliated in full force at Little Bighorn.
